Here’s Your Sign!
Campaign signs have already been a flashpoint in this race and here they come again. A new round of signs from GCISD Parents have appeared across the district. These are not vague. They are not subtle. They are about just one thing.
TAXES!
The signs call on voters to reject tax hikes. They tell voters to support AJ Pontillo, Dianna Sager, and Mary Humphrey. The signs include a QR code. Scan it and you are taken straight to a video. Not a quote taken out of context. Not a clipped soundbite. A full conversation.
In that video, Matthew White discusses “copper pennies.” He explains what they are. He acknowledges that the current board has chosen not to use them. And then he says something voters should hear clearly: “Sometimes you have to do what you have to do to make budget.”
That comment matters. Copper pennies are not free money. More than 60% of those dollars leave GCISD. They go to the state. They do not stay here. They do not serve our classrooms directly. Local taxpayers pay more. The benefit does not stay local.
That is the context. That is the full picture. And now, it is being put directly in front of voters.
Expect a reaction.
Not because the message is unclear. It is very clear.
Not because the video is misleading. It is their own words.
Not because the issue is irrelevant. It goes straight to the heart of how this district is funded.
The reaction will come because the message is their words and they wish they had never said them.
We have already seen how this plays out. Signs supporting one side are treated as fair. Signs that challenge that narrative are suddenly a problem. Signs are acceptable when they help the challengers. They are unacceptable when they do not.
That pattern is likely to repeat.
There will be complaints about tone. Complaints about tactics. Complaints about “misrepresentation.” But at the center of all of it is a simple reality: Voters are being shown exactly what was said.
The challengers will tell you now that they won’t try and raise taxes. Of course, they will say that now. They are scrambling for your vote. But what did they say when they were in a friendly room with a friendly host and were having fun and were telling the truth without thinking of the consequences? That’s when they were telling you the truth. They WILL try and raise your taxes. You can know that because they told you so.
