Frisco Centennial head baseball coach Jason Wilson said he was told that the position he accepted at Grapevine was no longer available because of a directive from GCISD Superintendent Dr. Robin Ryan.
On Thursday afternoon, Wilson, a Colleyville resident, received a call from GCISD athletic director Bryan Gerlich extending an offer to coach the Mustangs. Wilson said he accepted the position. Moments later, Wilson said he received a second call from Gerlich saying the offer had been rescinded. Wilson said Gerlich told him Dr. Ryan requested to rescind the offer.
Wilson, who led Frisco Centennial to four playoff appearances in five seasons and is 178-151 in his 11 seasons as a baseball coach between Centennial and Richardson Berkner, was told by Gerlich that is was not his decision. On Friday, Wilson said he has requested a meeting with the school board and Dr. Ryan.
Messages left for both Gerlich and Dr. Ryan were not returned.
Grapevine High School is looking for its fourth head coach in three seasons following the resignation of Lee Yeager two weeks ago. Yeager returned to Corpus Christi to become the head coach at the new Veterans Memorial High School.
Before the 2014 season, longtime coach Tim McCune resigned. He was replaced by assistant Jeff Harp, who guided the program through that season. Harp was not retained.
Yeager was hired in the summer of 2014 to head the program. He guided the Mustangs to a 25-7 record and appearance in the Class 5A Region I area playoffs. The Mustangs lost to Fort Worth Arlington Heights.
The GCISD school board is scheduled to meet Monday. Former Grapevine assistant and current Irving Nimitz coach Robert Mendoza is another finalist for this position.
