State Troopers H.D. Murphy & Edward Bryan Wheeler Honored with a Water Vessel Dedication –
On Easter Sunday, April 1, 1934, Texas State Troopers H.D. Murphy and Edward Wheeler were traveling through Grapevine, Texas, when they approached a vehicle on the side of the road.
In the course of their duty—and in the spirit of service—they stopped to help.
Inside that car were Bonnie Parker and Clyde Barrow.
What followed would become one of the darkest moments in our community’s history.
The officers were H.D. Murphy, just 22 years old, and Edward Bryan Wheeler, both committed to protecting and serving the people of Texas. Murphy had been on the job less than a year and was engaged to be married (only 12 days later). He remains the youngest officer of the Texas Department of Public Safety ever killed in the line of duty.
In a moment that still resonates through time, his fiancée wore her wedding dress to his funeral.
Together, Murphy and Wheeler embodied the very essence of service—answering a call for help without hesitation, unaware of the danger that awaited them.
Though they were laid to rest in East Texas, their sacrifice is forever woven into the fabric of this community. While Bonnie and Clyde became names known across the country, the legacy of the two officers who gave their lives here is too often overshadowed.
Their deaths marked a turning point. Public sentiment shifted, and within weeks, Bonnie and Clyde’s violent spree came to an end in Louisiana.
Today, nearly a century later, their legacy endures.
On the waters of Grapevine Lake, the Texas Department of Public Safety dedicated memorial vessels in honor of H.D. Murphy and Edward Bryan Wheeler—an enduring tribute in the very community where their courage and sacrifice will never be forgotten. These vessels will be put to work in Rockport and Brownsville. We were honored to hear from family members at today’s event, who are still marked by this event.
This is more than history. It is a reminder of two men who chose service, who stopped to help without hesitation – and who gave their lives in the line of duty.
As you travel along Dove Road, near Highway 114, take a moment to read the tall marble marker that stands in the location where these two young State Troopers made the ultimate sacrifices.
