Scam Alert!
This week, we received a report from a resident who was scammed out of $15,000 from someone who was impersonating as someone with the Tarrant County Sheriff’s Office. This resident was initially contacted by phone about an urgent matter and was eventually convinced to send money through a Bitcoin ATM.
If you receive a call from someone identifying themselves as a member of law enforcement, and you think it could be legitimate, please get their name, rank, and badge number, and contact that agency directly.
Scammers are sophisticated these days and can disguise their phone number. Many times, they try to keep you on the phone and create the perception there is an urgent situation that needs to be taken care of immediately. No one in law enforcement will ask you to pay in Bitcoin or gift cards.
When trying to figure out if you’re dealing with a scammer, remember:
• Scammers target everyone
• Be Inquisitive: Ask Questions and Check Facts
•When in doubt, hang up the phone and call us directly.
