GRAPEVINE, Texas – A Grapevine man is charged with a felony after being arrested for animal cruelty. 36-year-old Vanadus Green is charged with cruelty to a non-livestock animal.
On January 26, 2024, a Grapevine Animal Services Officer responded to an animal complaint behind the dumpster of the Super 8 hotel off SH-114. The officer discovered an unresponsive dog on the ground. The dog was taken to an emergency veterinary hospital where it was declared deceased.
Grapevine Animal Services took the dog back to the shelter for an examination. Employees noted the dog was severely emaciated with an open wound on its head and multiple rashes or abrasions on its body. Due to the condition of the recently deceased dog, it was transported to an outside facility for a necropsy.
The findings returned that the dog died of starvation. The animal’s bone marrow indicated a fat percentage of 9%. The normal range for a dog is 65-98% body fat in the bone marrow. The necropsy also revealed that the starvation period was prolonged, and the dog would have been suffering the entire time. Other injuries were also found on the animal that appeared to be less than a week old.
Investigators were able to identify a suspect through surveillance video at the hotel where the dog was last seen alive. Video showed Vanadus Green pulling the dog, and at times dragging the starved animal, through the hotel hallway and back parking lot.
Grapevine Police and Grapevine Animal Services worked diligently to identify the person responsible for the dog and collect evidence proving the dog was tortured. An arrest warrant was drafted, and officers arrested Green on February 28, 2024.
Grapevine Police thank the person who first reported concern for the tortured animal, and for the immediate help of employees at Super 8. Anyone who believes an animal is in need of help is urged to call Grapevine Animal Services at: 817.410.3370 or their local animal services if not in Grapevine.
