PRESS RELEASE
During the February 14, 2023 Roanoke City Council meeting, Mayor Gierisch swore in honorary Roanoke Police Officer Chance Williams. Byron Nelson School Resource Officer, Adam Watkins, has developed a friendship with Chance. As Chance’s family planned to celebrate his 18th birthday, Officer Watkins and the Roanoke Police Department worked on a special surprise. Chance has dreamed of becoming a police officer. The Roanoke Police Department had a uniform made for Chance, and partnered with the Roanoke City Council to swear him in as an honorary member of the Roanoke Police Department. Donning his new uniform, Chance spent his birthday patrolling the halls and parking lots of Byron Nelson High School. He handed out stickers, and spread joy throughout the school.
“I have had a great relationship with Chance. He always has a smile and lifts me up when I am having a rough day. He even loves to instruct me to “freeze! sit down!” said Officer Watkins. “I knew I wanted to do something for him for his birthday. I thought about a day with me being my partner. Chief Miller and Sergeant Pettigrew worked to make that a reality. Now he has the authority to tell folks to “freeze” for a day.”
