A new study found Texas to be the No. 39 most targeted state for phone scams during tax season. Moreover, nine Texas counties were among the top 100 counties targeted in America.
AllAreaCodes.com today released the States Most At Risk For Tax Season Scams after analyzing 15 million consumer complaints released by the FTC over the last three years (2016-18).
Texas ranked No. 39 with 1,421 FTC complaints per 100,000 people. The study dove deeper into counties and found nine Texas counties to be among the top 100 targeting counties in America:
#8 Collin County (Plano), TX
#10 Travis County (Austin), TX
#16 Denton County (Denton), TX
#44 Tarrant County (Fort Worth), TX
#70 Bexar County (San Antonio), TX
#76 Dallas County (Dallas), TX
#77 Harris County (Houston), TX
#98 El Paso County (El Paso), TX
#100 Hidalgo County (McAllen), TX
The analysis revealed phone scams increase by 20% in March and April as compared to January so consumers should be on alert.
The IRS has stated repeatedly that they will never call to demand immediate payment, will not ask for credit or debit card numbers over the phone, and will not threaten with the police or lawsuits. If you suspect the call is a scam, the IRS urges consumers to call them directly at 800-829-1040.
